What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin injections (commonly known as Botox) are among the most popular non-surgical treatments for reducing expression-related wrinkles. They help smooth areas such as:
Forehead lines
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
Vertical lines above the upper lip
Botox can also be used for:
Lifting the corners of the mouth and cheeks (Nefertiti neck lift)
Slimming the lower face
Reducing tension in the masseter muscles and neck
Smoothing vertical neck bands (“turkey neck”)
How does botulinum toxin work?
Botox works by temporarily blocking the connection between nerves and muscles. The toxin binds to nerve endings and prevents the release of neurotransmitters, which stops the muscle from contracting. As a result, the wrinkle-causing muscles relax, leaving the skin smoother and the facial expression more youthful.
Procedure
The injection process typically takes about 15 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
The maximum effect is visible after about 2 weeks.
Results usually last 4–6 months.
Aftercare and results
Mild bruising or tenderness may occur after the injections but usually disappears within a few days.
Makeup can be applied the same day, and normal daily activities can be resumed immediately.
Avoid massaging or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the toxin from spreading to unintended muscles.
Keep your head elevated on the first night after the procedure.
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, or hot baths for 24–48 hours.
Do not take aspirin or other blood-thinning medications before the procedure without consulting your doctor to reduce the risk of bruising.
Avoid excessive facial expressions immediately after treatment.
Results usually begin to appear within 3–7 days, with the full effect visible in about 2 weeks.
The outcome is a fresher, smoother facial appearance while maintaining natural expression.
