What is Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. As we age, the eyelid skin becomes thinner and less elastic, causing folds of skin to develop on the upper lids and creating puffy “bags” under the lower lids. This can give the face a tired and aged appearance.
In some cases, excess eyelid skin can even interfere with vision, making blepharoplasty necessary not only for aesthetic but also for medical reasons.
Who is a good candidate?
Blepharoplasty may be suitable if you:
Have drooping upper eyelid skin that makes you look tired,
Have developed puffiness or bags under the lower eyelids,
Have loose, wrinkled eyelid skin,
Experience vision obstruction due to eyelid folds,
Want a fresher, more youthful appearance,
Wish to make your eyes appear more open.
How the procedure is performed
Upper eyelid surgery is a relatively minor operation usually done under local anaesthesia.
Patients can typically leave the clinic the same day.
The surgery is performed through small incisions hidden in the natural eyelid creases.
- Excess skin and, if needed, fat tissue are removed.
- It is possible to correct only the upper or lower lids, or both at the same time.
- If both upper and lower eyelids are treated together, general anaesthesia is recommended.
Recovery and results
Moderate swelling and bruising are expected after surgery, usually starting to subside from the third day.
Mild bruising may last up to 2 weeks.
Stitches are typically removed about 6 days after the procedure.
Scars generally heal quickly and remain hidden in the natural eyelid folds.
The result is a fresher, more youthful, and more open-looking eye area.
