Aging causes a loss of elasticity in the eyelids and under-eye area, which results in excess skin on the upper lid and “bags” under the eyes, contributing to a tired and run-down appearance of the whole face.
The fat above and below the eye can pooch out and cause sagging or drooping around the eyes. A blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery results in a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the eyelids.
During a blepharoplasty, excess fat and skin are removed from the eyelids and eye region for a more youthful appearance. In cases where the skin fold is obstructing vision, a blepharoplasty helps patients see better.
This procedure is relatively short with minimal downtime. Small incisions are made within eyelid creases to remove excess skin and fat. Patients may opt for an upper blepharoplasty, a lower blepharoplasty, or both.
Eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia and patients are discharged the same day of the procedure. There may be some mild swelling and bruising around the eyes after surgery, but this will subside within a few weeks, revealing firmer skin with no bags.
Blepharoplasty sutures are usually well hidden and removed after the first 6 days. The eyelid skin heals very quickly and most patients can resume their daily routine within a couple of days.
